Board Member Spotlight - Dr. Mark A. Gallo

Dr. Mark A. Gallo
Professor, Pre-Health Advisor at Niagara University

What organization do you represent and what do you do there?
I am a biology professor at Niagara University. I serve as the Co-Chair of Sustainability and am also the pre-health advisor. I have the honor of being a part of the teaching/learning continuum surrounded by a cadre of young minds. Niagara University is dedicated to the preparation of students for a personal and professional life that includes service to others, especially those in need.

What other organizations do you volunteer or serve on?
Lewiston Kiwanis, New York Forest Owners Association, Western New York Honey Producers Association, Town of Lewiston Zoning Board

What is your favorite local business to support?
I love pizza and boy oh boy does that make for a wonderful addiction to have in the area :-). talking about this makes me hungry. And no I am not related to Gallo restaurant, that is a play on words because of the meaning rooster in Italian and the legend of the cocktail being invented in Lewiston with a rooster feather being placed in the drink.

What are you doing on your days off?
In my "spare time" I am actively involved in environmental stewardship. My family owns 160 acres consisting of open fields, early successional woodland, and mature hardwood forest. I have been actively working on regenerating some of the parcels to diverse forest habitat. I built a large post and beam barn mostly from trees harvested on the property. I also have 65 bee hives, a flock of chickens, and two German shorthair pointers. I am an active runner in the region, participating in most races. So there is no such thing as a day off.

What can you share with our membership on leadership?
As an educator there is no greater joy than seeing one of your student mentees graduate to a higher level and take on a leadership role. I lead by example. I am impressed time and again by the fortitude and determination I see in these young adults on campus. I am like a spark that lights the flame in them. As there is only one of me I have found a way to turn out lots of individuals who will go out and help make the world a better place, having an impact far greater than anything I could have accomplished by myself.
